On the night of the 13 th of March 2015, terrible Cyclone Pam has beaten the Vanuatu Islands.

​It is only when Cyclone Pam is approaching Vanuatu that the cyclone reaches category 5, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The capital Port Vila is hard hit, as are many other parts of the country. It caused significant damage. Oxfam reports that nearly all of the buildings in Port Vila have been seriously damaged and President Baldwin Lonsdale says the “majority” of Vanuatis are now homeless. While the eye of the cyclone approached Efate Island with dire consequences, the islands of Erromango, Tanna and Aneityum, further south, were hit even harder. On 15 March, Vanuatu declared a state of emergency throughout its territory. Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam was the second most intense tropical cyclone of the south Pacific Ocean in terms of sustained winds and is regarded as one of the worst natural disasters in the history of Vanuatu

​It  is proven that the phenomenon has damaged at least 80% of the buildings and dwellings [in Vanuatu] and that the vegetation and crops are devastated.The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) draws a final assessment: some 166,000 people in Vanuatu (about 64 percent of the population) were affected by the cyclone, 3,300 were displaced and 24 people were killed.

​Of course, Ratua Foundation has gone to great lengths to find funding to help communities and schools.

A call for funds was launched, due to the open handedness of the international community the sum of 10 million vatu was donated.

Ratua Foundation has contributed to the purchase of a water tank, solar fridges, seeds and plants for culture and sales in order to support a community of 30 families who had set up a successful system for 5 years which was totally destroyed.
